Painting and Decorating a Replastered Home in Exeter
Hi, I’m Martin from Exe Home Improvements.
We offer painting and decorating for both residential and commercial clients around Exeter.
This week, we started a new residential project in a house that was recently replastered. Some rooms need more work than others, so let’s walk through what we do on day one.
Step One: Preparation Is Key
When walls or ceilings have new plaster, you can’t just paint straight over them.
Preparation is everything.
In this home, some rooms had only light plastering, while others had a full re-skim. One ceiling had just been finished. Other rooms — upstairs and downstairs — needed a full paint job from scratch.
Making Space and Checking Surfaces
The first step is clearing the space.
We moved all furniture and items out of the way, so we could get to the walls and ceilings properly.
Next, we checked the plaster. Some areas needed filling or sanding. It’s important to fix small holes or rough patches before painting, so everything looks clean and even.
Mist Coating and Filler Work
Over the next day or two, we’ll apply a mist coat to all the new plaster.
This special watered-down paint helps the top coats stick better.
While that dries, we’ll go around and add filler to any cracks, gaps, or corners. Then we’ll sand everything smooth — getting it ready for the final paint.
How Long Does This Take?
This job will take about 2 weeks in total.
The first few days are all about preparation, because a good finish starts with a solid base.
