Painting fresh plaster? Don't make this common mistake!

Painting fresh plaster? Don’t make this common mistake!

Hi, I’m Martin from Exe Home Improvements, based in Devon. We work on residential and commercial projects, and today I want to talk about something we see a lot — paint peeling off new plaster.

It happens more than you’d think, and the reason is simple: no mist coat.

What Happens Without a Mist Coat?

If you skip the mist coat, your paint won’t stick.
We often see walls like this: the top paint layer looks fine at first, but soon it starts peeling. Underneath? Bare plaster.

That’s a big problem because now the paint has nothing to bond to, and it’ll keep flaking off.

So What’s a Mist Coat?

A mist coat is the first coat of paint you apply to new plaster. It’s very thin — a mix of paint and water.
This lets the plaster soak in the paint and create a solid base for your next layers.

What Paint Should You Use?

We always use contract matt paint — not vinyl.
Why?

  • It’s water-based

  • It lets the plaster breathe

  • It soaks in better

In this video, I used Leyland Trade Contract Matt, mixed 50/50 with water. It looks thin, but that’s the goal.

Tips for a Perfect Mist Coat

Move quickly – new plaster dries the paint fast
Spread it evenly – don’t let paint pool in one spot
Back roll – go over the same area again to smooth it out

This first coat is the most important one — get it right, and the rest of your painting will be easier and longer-lasting.

The Results Speak for Themselves

After a few hours, the ceiling looks clean and solid.
And no, I didn’t stop there — I did the next room, another ceiling, and more.
Hard work, but worth it.
